A thermal printer feeding blank paper is almost never broken. In order of likelihood the cause is: the roll is loaded upside down, the paper is not thermal, the print head is dirty, or the head has genuinely failed. The first two account for the large majority of cases and take seconds to check.
1. The roll is upside down
Thermal paper is coated on one side only. Loaded the wrong way round, the heating element presses against the uncoated back and nothing appears — the printer behaves perfectly, feeds normally, and produces blank paper.
Two quick tests:
- Scratch test — drag a fingernail or coin firmly across the paper. The coated side leaves a dark mark. That side must face the print head.
- Roll direction — on almost all counter-top receipt printers, the paper feeds off the underside of the roll, not over the top.
Reload with the coated side up and print a test receipt.
2. It is not thermal paper
Plain paper of the same width fits perfectly and prints nothing at all, because there is no ink and no coating to react.
Same scratch test: if nothing darkens on either side, it is not thermal paper. This happens most often when a roll is bought locally in a hurry.
3. The print head is dirty
Symptoms progress rather than appearing suddenly — first faint patches, then vertical white lines, then largely blank output. Dust, paper residue and adhesive from label stock build up on the head.
To clean: switch the printer off, open it, and wipe the thin metal strip the paper passes under using a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry fully before closing.
Do not use water, and never scrape with anything hard — the head is easily scored, and a scored head prints a permanent white line.
4. The head has failed
If the paper is correct and correctly loaded, the head is clean, and output is still blank or missing consistent vertical bands, the head has likely failed. This is a service item, and on lower-cost printers replacement often approaches the price of a new unit.
Related symptoms worth separating
- Prints, but fades within days — low-grade paper, or receipts stored in heat or sunlight. Not a printer fault.
- Prints garbled characters — a driver or encoding problem, not a hardware one.
- Feeds nothing at all — check the roll is seated, the cover is fully latched, and the paper sensor is not blocked by a scrap.
- Cuts mid-receipt — a cutter jam, usually a paper fragment.
Preventing repeat failures
Buy paper from a consistent source. Cheap rolls are the common thread behind faint printing, residue build-up and premature head wear, and the saving per roll is far smaller than the cost of a head.
Clean the head on a schedule rather than in response to problems — monthly in a busy shop, and always after switching to a new brand of paper.
