Direct thermal labels fade; thermal transfer labels last. That single difference decides which technology you need, and choosing wrongly is why some businesses find their stock labels unreadable months after printing them.
Direct thermal
Works exactly like a receipt printer: heat-sensitive label stock darkens under the print head. No ribbon, no ink, nothing to replace but labels.
Advantages — cheapest to run, simplest to operate, nothing to load but the roll.
Limitation — the image fades. Heat, sunlight and friction all accelerate it, and in Egyptian summer conditions a label on a warehouse shelf or a parcel left in the sun can become unreadable in weeks.
Use it for shipping labels, delivery labels, and anything scanned within days or weeks.
Thermal transfer
Uses a ribbon. The head melts ink from the ribbon onto the label, which can be plastic or synthetic rather than paper.
Advantages — the print does not fade, resists heat, sunlight, moisture and abrasion, and works on durable materials.
Limitation — ribbons are an extra consumable and an extra loading step, and the printers cost more.
Use it for asset tags, product labels that sit on shelves for months, anything outdoors, anything exposed to heat or chemicals, and any barcode that must still scan a year from now.
Choosing by how long the label must survive
- Days — direct thermal, comfortably.
- Weeks, indoors — direct thermal, kept out of sunlight.
- Months or longer — thermal transfer.
- Outdoors or hot storage — thermal transfer, without exception.
Label size and gap detection
Label printers detect where one label ends and the next begins, usually via a gap or a black mark on the backing. Stock that does not match what the printer expects causes misalignment — print creeping across the gap, or the printer feeding blank labels.
Calibrate the printer whenever you change label size or supplier. It is a short routine and it prevents a whole class of alignment complaints.
Barcodes need contrast and quiet zones
Two things make barcodes fail at the scanner, and neither is the printer's fault:
- Insufficient contrast — faded direct thermal print, or a label that is too small for the data encoded.
- No quiet zone — barcodes require blank margin either side. Designs that run the code to the label edge scan unreliably.
Print a test label and scan it with the actual scanner you will use, from the actual distance, before committing to a print run.
Adhesive matters too
Labels are specified by adhesive as well as material. Permanent adhesive on a surface you will need clean later is a problem; removable adhesive on a parcel travelling in heat is a different problem. Match the adhesive to the surface and the journey.

Can one printer do both?
Some thermal transfer printers also run direct thermal without the ribbon. Direct-thermal-only models cannot do transfer.
